Wireless Microphone Systems. Audio-Technica Wireless Microphones. Handheld and Headset Wireless Microphones

Just like almost every other aspect of our lives, the evolution of technology has continued to have a positive impact on the world of professional sound equipment. Technological advances have brought an exponential increase in available features, offering all of us a lot more bang for the buck. One area where this boom is readily apparent is in the realm of handheld and headset wireless microphone systems. While there are a lot of brands of high-quality diversity systems available on the market (and most of them are very good), the focus of this discussion will be upon Audio-Technica wireless microphones.

Established in 1962 in Japan, Audio-Technica was originally established as a manufacturer of phonograph cartridges. Eventually, their product line expanded to include headphones, followed by microphones. The first Audio-Technica wireless microphones were introduced in 1986, and were met with resounding approval. Since that time, their line of handheld and headset wireless microphone systems has continued to expand.

The current line of Audio-Technica wireless microphones includes a variety of configurations, including lavalier systems, as well as handheld and headset wireless microphone systems. It is important to note that most of the Audio-Technica wireless microphones operate on a diversity system, which means they have two antennas mounted on the receiver, controlled by an internal system which continually and seamlessly switches to whichever antenna is receiving the strongest signal. The result is a dramatic reduction in the loss of signal, also known as dropouts.

Before we go any further, perhaps it would be best to explain the parts of a wireless system. Of course the signal starts with the microphone, which may be of the handheld, headset, or lavalier (clip-on) variety. Next is the transmitter; in the case of the handheld microphone, the transmitter is built into the handheld unit. For the other two types of microphones, a cable connects the microphone to a transmitter, which is roughly the size of a deck of cards and can be clipped to a belt or in a pocket, or tucked into a waistband. The transmitter then broadcasts the signal to the receiver, which is connected by a cable to the audio mixer.

Most Audio-Technica wireless microphones operate in the UHF frequency band, which is much less susceptible to interference than the cheaper VHF band. Also, most of their handheld and headset wireless microphone systems are frequency-agile, meaning the user can select from a number of channels (up to 200 in some cases) in order to avoid any potential interference. This frequency-agility, combined with full diversity, assures trouble-free performance.

Another benefit to having selectable channels is the ability to use multiple systems in a single location. This capability becomes increasingly important in theater productions, choral presentations, or anywhere else multiple microphones may be needed. The 4000 and 5000 series of Audio-Technica wireless microphones include a feature called IntelliScan, which automatically selects the best frequency available. Additionally, these systems may be monitored on a computer system using the available software. The less expensive, but very popular, 2000 and 3000 Series UHF wireless systems also offer an auto-frequency scan, which hunts for the strongest available signal and sets that frequency on the transmitter and receiver.

Throughout Audio-Technica’s entire line of handheld and headset wireless microphone systems, the quality is consistent from the non-diversity 200 series on up through the top-of-the-line 5000 series. The only real choice you face is which features you need, and which ones you can live without. No matter which one you choose, you’ll never want to be stuck on that microphone cable leash again!
